Join GBBO biologists for a community science outing to search for pinyon pine cones! Pinyon Jays are uniquely adapted to rely on pinyon pine seeds, harvesting and caching thousands of pine nuts each fall to prepare for winter. Because pinyon pine cone production varies widely from year to year, tracking this important food resource helps us better understand and conserve this declining species.

During the outing, we’ll review the Survey123 form used to collect pinyon pine cone data and learn how these observations support Pinyon Jay conservation. If we’re lucky, we may even see Pinyon Jays in harvest mode!

We will be visiting Sevenmile Canyon and possible opportunistic locations along the road. Expect to hike up to a mile along, moderately sloped terrain, most hiking will be along a dirt road.
