About Great Basin Bird Observatory
For the past 29 years, Great Basin Bird Observatory (GBBO) has been a leading force in bird conservation science. GBBO’s major successes include the Breeding Bird Atlas of Nevada, over 15 years of research on declining species such as the Pinyon Jay, LeConte’s Thrasher, and Bendire’s Thrasher, numerous peer-reviewed publications, and solution-focused partnerships with stakeholders. Your donation helps ensure the continuation of these vital efforts, supporting Nevada’s wildlife and our shared natural heritage in the Great Basin region, and beyond.
What is the Nevada Bird-a-thon?
Each spring, GBBO hosts the Nevada Bird-a-thon, a statewide fundraising competition supporting bird conservation in Nevada. Modeled after a walk-a-thon, teams and individuals collect donations for their birding efforts while competing to record the most bird species and raise the most funds.
Participants select a 24-hour period between May 1–31 to count as many bird species as possible, or they may participate from home by creating a yard bird list for the duration of the event. Prizes are awarded for both species totals and funds raised.
Funds raised through the Nevada Bird-a-thon support community science, outreach, as well as critical conservation efforts that have recently suffered from federal funding cuts. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, all donations and sponsorships are fully tax-deductible.
Sponsorships Will Help To:
Protect vulnerable species: Research and monitoring inform strategies to conserve Pinyon Jays, desert thrashers, and other at-risk birds before populations decline further
Guide effective conservation: Data from community science and collaborative programs ensure habitat management and development decisions are science-based
Engage and educate communities: Outreach programs build public awareness and foster stewardship, creating long-term support for Nevada’s birds and ecosystems
