Pinyon Jay Expedition at Great Basin National Park with Soldiers2Scientists

Join GBBO for another Pinyon Jay Community Science expedition at Great Basin National Park! As part of GBBO’s Pinyon Jay Community Science project we collaborated with Soldiers2Scientists in 2025 to survey for Pinyon Jays in Great Basin National Park. We are going back again this year! Use the link below to reserve your spot today.

At this 3-day camping trip you can expect to connect with GBBO staff and learn about Pinyon Jays and the important community science project initiated by GBBO in 2021. There will be a training orientation, and opportunities to join experts on surveys over the course of three days.

These plots were established in 2025, and will be surveyed for the second time in 2026. By sampling the same plots in successive years, we hope to begin to understand which areas of the park are most important to Pinyon Jays. This time of year is also when pinyon pine cones are ripening. Ripe cones are the most important food resource for Pinyon Jays, and these cones are not produced in equal amounts every year. By tracking the availability of their most important food resource, we can develop a better understanding of what areas are most important to the jays. GBBO staff will guide participants through collecting data on pinyon pine productivity.

Use the link below to register for a campsite for the 3-night duration of this event. There is a limited capacity of camp sites, so please reserve respectfully and consider coordinating with friends.
