Pinyon-Juniper Woodland Bioblitz in Elko County!

  • 60 Youth Center Rd Elko, NV, 89801 United States (map)

Join GBBO in Elko with partners from NDOW and BLM for a Pinyon-Juniper Bioblitz! Last year we explored the Bodie Hills, this year we’re headed east. Pinyon-Juniper woodland is the most common forest type in the western United States. Yet much of this habitat is remote and under-visited by birdwatchers. We don’t know as much about the inhabitants of these woodlands as we do many other habitat types. The focus of this bioblitz is birds, by the end of the day we will have a comprehensive list of every bird using the area. We will opportunstically document all of the inverts, plants, mammals, reptiles, and whatever else we can find! We chose this particular site because there is a Pinyon-Juniper removal treatment scheduled to occur. Our hope is to gather data from this location before the habitat is modified. In addition to free form bioblitz-ing, there will be a guided Pinyon Jay community science walk, and opportunities to join experts in the field.

The big day is Saturday, June 14th. We will meet in Elko at the NDOW office and caravan/carpool out to the site. But first, we will meet on Zoom for a strategic planning session. Once registered, you will receive info about the Zoom session.
