Join us for this exciting community science weekend! The Great Basin Bird Observatory will be in Great Basin National Park with Soldiers 2 Scientists for a weekend of community science. Soldiers 2 Scientists is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing volunteer opportunities for veterans seeking engaging outdoor recreation, career advancement, or those struggling with post-deployment transitions. GBBO is excited about this partnership, and Ned will be staying with them for a few days to help them with Pinyon Jay community science. Ned will be giving a few training sessions, and helping guide surveys. For anyone that comes, there will be opportunity to participate in these training events, as well as to explore the park while looking for Pinyon Jays.

This is also the time of year when pinyon pine cones ripen, and Pinyon Jays will likely be in a harvesting frenzy. The birds are particularly enjoyable to watch at this time of year. The newest addition to GBBO’s Pinyon Jay community science program is the pine cone counting survey. Ned will also be helping participants with this survey. The cone counts can be done while surveying for Pinyon Jays, and are quite easy and provide very useful information on pinyon pine cone distribution.
