All of the following organizations are dedicated to research
and education about birds, and all of them offer significant opportunities
for volunteers.
HawkWatch International
A Utah-based organization dedicated to preserving raptors and the
ecosystems they depend on. Some of HWI’s most exciting work is done
right here in the Great Basin.
Lahontan Audubon
Society
This Reno-based Audubon chapter is especially active in environmental
education. Plus, it supplies the community with an excellent program
of regular field trips and monthly meetings.
Red Rock Audubon
Society
Based in Las Vegas, the Red Rock Audubon Society is a community
organization focusing on birding in southern nevada and surrounding
areas.
Nevada Wilderness Project
This organization combines activism with on-the-ground study of
proposed wilderness areas in Nevada. Of particular interest to Nevada’s
birders is NWP’s current work to get Wilderness designation for
the McCullough Mountains of far southern Nevada.
Partners In Flight
An international consortium of over 100 agencies and institutions
committed to the cause of bird conservation. Major initiatives of
PIF include monitoring and inventory, research, management, and
education programs.
Point Reyes Bird Observatory
One of the oldest and most successful bird observatories in America.
PRBO is located in Marin County (California), a birder’s mecca.
