Birdsong Training Program : Introduction

Do you want to be better prepared for point count surveys? Did you always mean to work on your birding skills, but never got around to learning songs? Well, here is your chance to delve into “the language” of Nevada birds in a stress-free, game-like environment.

Our program covers the species that you are likely to hear singing in the major habitats of Nevada. Our selection is not all-inclusive, though, and we recommend the CDs on which this training center is based, which feature quality recordings of all species by Kevin Colver Productions. Kevin is a generous supporter of GBBO and has approved the use of his recordings for our training center. Please visit our Recommended Products page for ordering information on these CDs.

Our training program is divided into 20 modules, covering each of thirteen habitat types of Nevada. We will post these in batches of 2 - 3 at a time over the next three months. As per agreement with our donors, the training program is restricted to GBBO members only and no part of it may be reproduced or distributed in any form. Each training module covers birds found in one habitat type. You may select only those habitats that you are likely to survey this summer, or as many as you’d like.

Be forewarned, though: if you do too many modules at once, you are likely to experience sensory overload! If that happens, take a break, then go back to the one you know best and slow your pace. Trust us, each time you successfully complete a module, it’ll be easier the next time around.

If you have renewed your GBBO membership within the past 12 months, please , and we’ll send you the password within 24 – 48 hours. If you haven’t renewed your membership recently or want to become a GBBO member, please fill out a membership form. Write a note on the form (“password please”), and we’ll contact you with the password as soon as we receive your dues. If you’re not sure about your current GBBO membership status, please to find out.

Later in the workshop, we will offer advanced modules, where hard-to-distinguish songs will be grouped together. Meanwhile, we would appreciate any feedback or requests you might have to make this workshop as useful to you as possible.
